Welcome to our travel guide for Hvar, Croatia! Hvar is a stunning island located in the Adriatic Sea, known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant nightlife, and rich history. Whether you’re a nature lover, history enthusiast, or simply looking for some relaxation under the Mediterranean sun, Hvar has something to offer for everyone.

We started off our day trip to Hvar, Croatia by boarding a Jadrolinija ferry in sunny port city of Split, Croatia.  The ferry ride from Split to Hvar is approximately 2 hours one way. You can bring a vehicle or in our case, a scooter, for an extra charge.

Split has daily, year round Jadrolinija ferry options that depart from Split to Hvar, and several other islands. During the summer season, Jardrolinija even offers a ferry from Split to Dubrovink- which in our opinion is the easiest and best option to travel there.

The Jadrolinija ferries offer refreshments, like coffee, alcohol, and small treats during the short voyage. There is a high likelihood that you will see dolphins during your voyage too, if you are looking close enough, which makes the ride even better. We have been fortunate enough to see dolphins jumping on nearly every ferry ride we have taken.

The ferry from Split, Croatia to Hvar, Croatia, drops you in Stari Grad, Hvar. Since Hvar is a large island, and Stari Grad is approximately 30 minutes by car away from Hvar Town, the main tourist area on Hvar, you will likely need to rent a vehicle or take a taxi. There are several taxi options that are typically waiting directly outside the ferry drop off point.

If you’re looking for some outdoor adventure, consider renting a scooter to explore Hvar at your own pace. Scooter rental services are readily available at Stari Grad and provide an excellent way to discover hidden gems such as lavender fields that dot the countryside. There are also a few options to rent a car, a four wheeler, a side-by-side, or our personal favorite, a scooter! There are motorcycle rental options also, but anything above 50cc will require a valid motorcycle endorsement. We visited Brac, Croatia in the past and rented a side-by-side and it was an incredible experience.

After you secure your ride or vehicle, you can follow the crowd and head toward Hvar town, or get lost on the curvy coastal roads that spread around the island and stumble through Hvar’s many lavender fields. During our trip to Hvar, we noticed many bicyclists taking on the challenge of cycling up Hvar’s steep and curvy roads. If you are a cyclist, this would be a difficult, but unforgettable ride.

Once you arrive in Hvar’s scenic old town, one of the must-visit attractions in is the Fortica Fortress. Perched on a hill overlooking the town of Hvar, this fortress offers panoramic views of the surrounding area and provides a glimpse into the island’s past. Take a leisurely stroll up to the fortress and immerse yourself in centuries-old history.

After you check out Fortica Fortress you can wander through Hvar’s town’s riva and grab some food and a glass of wine. Hvar town has many outstanding restaurants that overlook the stunning Adriatic sea. After grabbing food in Hvar town, you can stroll throughout the small town and shop for souvenirs throughout the many boutique shops and stalls spread around the city.

If you are looking for some nightlife, Hvar town has several boat taxis to the famous Carpe Diem island where the parties go well into the morning. You can visit Carpe Diem as we did during the day, and experience the very small island and eat or grab a drink at the only restaurant and bar on the island if you prefer a bit quieter experience.

When it comes to travel tips in Croatia, it’s important to note that Hvar can get quite busy during peak tourist seasons. To make the most of your visit, consider exploring lesser-known parts of the island or opting for off-peak times when crowds are thinner.

In conclusion, Hvar is an enchanting destination that offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and exciting activities. From exploring historical landmarks like Fortica Fortress to immersing yourself in fragrant lavender fields or embarking on scooter adventures around town – there’s no shortage of fun things to do in Hvar, Croatia. So pack your bags, embrace the Mediterranean charm, and get ready for an unforgettable travel experience.
