No Venice Travel Blog is complete, without a top five things to do, so without further ado, here is our top 5!
1. Riding a Gondola through Venice’s Charming Cannels
Emily and I have been fortunate to visit Venice twice and both times we have enjoyed taking a traditional Venetian Gondola through the winding cannels.
Here are few Venice Travel Tips for helping you choose the right gondola experience!
Some gondoliers sing, some are funny, and some just let you take it all in. There are different routes that gondoliers offer too, depending on where you find them in the city. Some go under the gorgeous Riloto Bridge, and some go through quitter cannels. There are also several areas spread throughout the city where you can hire a gondolier. You can take a gondola with a group or just a couple. In 2023, we paid around 80 euros for a gondola ride. If you are near a bridge, chances are there is a gondolier nearby waiting for you to climb aboard.
2. Taking a Glass Blowing Class
The Venetian art of glass blowing has a rich history dating back to the 13th century. However, did you know that in the 17th century, the Venetian government took extraordinary measures to protect the secrets of glassmaking? Glass artisans were forbidden to leave the Republic, and revealing trade secrets to outsiders was punishable by death. This strict control aimed to maintain Venice's monopoly on the exquisite artistry and craftsmanship of Murano glass.
We booked a short glass making class at a small intimate glass shop near our Airbnb and had a great time. The instructor was easy going and the process was not too intense. In full disclosure – it was very difficult to do, so don’t expect to be able to actually create anything intricate like you see in all the gift shops spread throughout the city, but you should be able to leave with a tiny glass souvenir of Venetian glass which was perfect for us.
3. Explore Doge’s Palace
Nestled along the iconic St. Mark's Square, the Doge's Palace (Palazzo Ducale) stands as a testament to the opulence and power of the Venetian Republic. This grand Gothic palace, a masterpiece of Venetian architecture, served as the official residence of the doge, the supreme authority of the city. Today, visitors can explore the rich history and lavish interiors of the palace, marveling at the stunning artwork that adorns its walls. Don't miss the Bridge of Sighs, which connects the palace to the historic prisons.
Doge’s Palace is open daily from 8:30 AM to 7:00 PM, and admission costs around €25.
